English Interview Strategy Mini-Course

Part 2: Your MINIMAL Interview Objectives

2.1
Cover The Job's Basic Requirements

Show them you have the SKILLS FIT

What does...
SKILLS FIT
...mean?

SKILLS FIT means that you have shown your potential employer that you have the minimum level of skills to do the job for their company (as a NEW employee).

Different employers will have a different idea about how 'ready and able' a new employee needs to be. Some companies and jobs will expect a candidate to be fully productive from day one. Other companies will imagine a period of 'on the job' learning before you are fully productive.

Knowing what the employer expects or doesn't expect from you on "Day One" can be critical in showing you have a Skills Fit.

Basically (in terms of their company): You have shown that you are a 'risk free choice' to do the job at a technical / competency level.
  • Key Considerations:

  • fiber_manual_recordCommunicate very clearly, and very early, that you have the core skills
  • fiber_manual_recordHave stories prepared to show how you meet the required skills.
  • fiber_manual_recordDon't hide: If you don't have certain required skills, tell them why you are to make sure it is not a serious problem.
  • fiber_manual_recordAsk them if they feel there are core skills you are missing, and address their concerns
  • fiber_manual_recordHighlight your ability at important but unspecified skills (for example speed of work, professionalism, communication skills, written skills etc)
  • fiber_manual_recordIn screening interviews help the interviewer (who is probably non-technical in your area) if there are skills that are required but they haven't seen on your CV / application. Perhaps your wording is different from their job specifications list.

Key Takeaway:

One way to show how well you will do the job is to arrive with a plan - at least a bullet point list of actionable steps.

Key Takeaway:

As well as making sure you show that you meet the declared requirements of the job, imagine there are hidden job requirements - and aim to meet them too.

2.2
Cover The Boss's Basic Needs

Why does this boss need you?

What is...
Your REAL Job Role
...exactly?

As well as showing that you are technically able to do the job, you need to show your potential manager that you are able to help THEM. Simple performance at your own job may only indirectly help them, you need to show that you will be helping them directly in some way.
Show them that you bring "solutions and not problems" - make them feel THEY NEED YOU!
  • Some ideas for things that can help a manager hit THEIR targets:

  • fiber_manual_recordIncrease Sales
  • fiber_manual_recordIncrease Profit
  • fiber_manual_recordDecrease Costs
  • fiber_manual_recordDecrease Losses
  • fiber_manual_recordIncrease their time (by being more independent)
  • fiber_manual_recordIncrease their productivity (by helping to solve their problems)
  • fiber_manual_recordReduce their worry (by producing high quality work early)
  • fiber_manual_recordReduce their workload (by you helping team members)

Key Takeaway:

By focusing on their problems you are going to have much more success in the interview

2.3
The Importance of Culture

Show them you have CULTURE FIT

What does...
CULTURE FIT
...mean?

CULTURE FIT means that you are able to integrate your style of work and personality into the company without causing problems. Culture Fit is a minimum requirement for the employer to feel happy about hiring you.

The feeling you want the company staff to have about you is that "You are one of us". Additionally, the feeling you want your potential boss to specifically feel is that "I can manage you."

Basically (in terms of their company): You have shown that you are a 'risk free choice' to become a productive, conforming and amiable part of the team & company.
Why is...
Culture
...so important?

Think about how important it is to work well with others. The skills needed to do a job can be learnt but it is difficult to change a person's attitude. That is why manager's are afraid of a person who has a personality that clashes with their team's culture.
A person who doesn't fit culturally will cause general loss of productivity, satisfation and 'enjoyment' in all areas of the company that the person interacts with.
